Pinworms are one of the most common intestinal infections in the US — especially among school-age children. They spread easily, but they're also highly treatable. Here's what to look for.

Nighttime Itching

Anal or genital itching that's worse at night — the most common and distinctive sign of pinworm infection.

Restless Sleep

Trouble sleeping, tossing and turning, or waking up scratching — especially in children.

Irritability

Kids may become unusually cranky or have difficulty focusing at school due to lost sleep and discomfort.

Abdominal Discomfort

Mild stomach pain, nausea, or loss of appetite — sometimes the only noticeable symptom in adults.

Visible Signs

Small white worms (about 1/4 inch) may be visible in stool or around the anus at night.

Directions

How to take it.

Standard instructions for adults, children 12 and over, and children 2 to under 12. Children under 2 years or under 25 lb should only use under a doctor's direction.

Weigh the person

Use body weight to find the correct number of tablets on the dosing chart. Dosage is 5 mg of pyrantel base per pound (11 mg per kg).

Take as a single dose

Take the recommended number of tablets by mouth, with water. Can be taken with or without food.

Treat the whole family

Pinworms spread easily at home and at school. If one person has them, treat every household member at the same time to prevent reinfection.

Wash thoroughly

Wash all bedding, pajamas, and underwear in hot water. Keep fingernails short and washed frequently for two weeks after treatment.

Before you take it.

Do not use if the blister is cut or broken.
Do not exceed the recommended dosage. Maximum single dose is 1 gram (1000 mg).
Ask a doctor before use if you are pregnant, nursing a baby, or have liver disease.
Children under 25 lb or under 2 years should not use this product unless directed by a doctor.
Side effects may include abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, or dizziness. If these persist, consult a doctor.
Store between 15°–30°C (59°–86°F).
Keep out of reach of children. In case of overdose, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center right away (1-800-222-1222).
